Places I've Lived

And what I thought of them.

Sioux City, Iowa. It's where I was born and where my maternal Grandma and Grandpa lived as long as I knew them. They're both buried there. I liked Sioux City and always thought it was cool when it said "Where the West Begins" somewhere in the town. I was just a little kid when I used to see that sign. I had a cowboy/horse fixation when I was a kid. To me, the "West" meant cowboys, horses, cows, and did I mention horses?

Ames, Iowa. It's where I spent the first 5 years of my life. My Dad was going to Iowa State College, getting his masters degree in Ag Engineering. I don't remember a lot about Ames, except for living in student housing in a Quonset hut and having cinder roads that hurt to walk on when I tried to go barefoot.

Moline, Illinois. We moved to an duplex there when Dad finished school and got a job with John Deere.

East Moline, Illinois. We moved to our very own house, it was our first one. I was in Third grade when we made this move. I hated moving away from my friends but soon began to like living in our own house and having a yard and flowers and a ravine to play in. Once I made lots of friends who lived within a few blocks of us, I loved it. We lived in East Moline all the rest of my single life.

Spirit Lake, Iowa. We spent all our summers at our cabin on West Lake Okoboji. It's always been our second home. We still go there every summer, but not nearly as much as we used to as kids. I was married there.

Irvington, Iowa. If you know where that is, you win the prize!! It's a tiny town just south of Algona, Iowa. I lived there after I was married, it was my husband's home town. Not bad, as little Iowa towns go, but I was pretty lonely there. I made some friends, but was closest to my husband's grandmother. She was the coolest lady I've ever known! I also had a good friend who lived in Luverne, Iowa...just a hoot and a holler away from Irvington...she was my best buddy from the cabin and in fact, she's the one who introduced me to my husband. We hung out together some and enjoyed going shopping and doing lunch.

Hampton, Illinois. My husband and I moved to my old stomping grounds and bought a house in Hampton, just next to East Moline. I've lived here ever since. In the same house and that's been for the past 37 years. I must like it here pretty well, since I've been here that long. Or maybe I'm just comfortable. There is something pretty comfy about living where you know the people and know your way around.

Oh, and by the way....

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!

  1. Loved this blog! I've never spent any time in Kansas (did you know Dorothy, and Toto, too?) or Iowa. I've flown through Illinois, however. Anyway, I enjoyed the tour. And the animation is wonderful! Happy Halloween! Kathy PS I'm proud of myself. I haven't broken into the candy, yet!

  2. Wow - small world. I, too, was born in SooCity (St. Joe's hospital). I grew up in Turin (in western Iowa, smack in the middle of the Loess Hills) and graduated in Onawa. Of COURSE I know where Irvington is! LOL And Luverne. I swear woman, we have GOT to get together next summer when you go to the cabin. This was a cool post. And I love the animations. Have a great weekend Ginni.
