Of course, Andy, having been in the Navy for 22 years has a load of them on his arms and chest. He has a black rose on his forearm, for a good buddy who died in the Viet Nam war. I think that one is the neatest. Most of his tats have faded and look pretty foggy now. He has no desire to get them brightened or fixed. And he doesn't want anymore. He said he was pretty inebriated when he got each one. Funny, my late husband had one that he got when he was about to ship out for Korea from San Francisco during the Viet Nam war era....and he was inebriated when he got his too. Andy and him had almost the exact same tat...it's a little "cute" devil with a saying under and over it. The devil is exactly the same, it's just the sayings that are different. I thought that was a sign when I met Andy that he was the one and that my late DH was aiming me right at Andy!
I always figured that if I got a tattoo, being the budding artist that I am (yes, I'm still budding...never did come into full bloom!) I would have designed it myself and call it a work of art. As if that would have made it a bit more acceptable. Maybe that's why none of my sibs nor I ever got one...we feel it's unacceptable somehow?? Ye gads, are we all that closed minded??
Ye gads, am I that frumpy that I say "ye gads"???? And why does that remind me of the movie "Music Man"?
I have a lot of co-workers who have tats and some of them are pretty cool. One thing I've noticed about tattoos is that most of them have some meaning to the wearer. Some of the meanings are deep and heart-felt and some are fun and happy. Anyway, you wouldn't believe the lady bus drivers who sport tattooos! I truly admire some of them (the drivers AND the tats) and a few of them are really good artwork, too!
When I was considering getting a tat, I had a lot of ideas. I thought I'd get one on the bottom of my big toe of either a sunflower or a smiley face. That way, when I'm sitting on a beach sunning, people would see that. But then I was reminded of how painful it would be to have a bazillion needle pricks on one's big toe and that idea went out the window.
I also thought, since I love roses, I'd get one of a rose on my chest right above my left breast, over my heart. But then someone told me that as I aged and sagged it would become a "long-stemmed" rose! That one cracked me up, but I gave up that idea too.
Then I figured since I love roses AND I love being in the water, I'd design a rose floating on water with it's reflection and have it put on my shoulder. I never did sit down and design that but I saw a similar graphic a while back in an email I got from someone. I saved the file and just happen to have it loaded in PhotoBucket, so I'll post it here:

Of course, a tat wouldn't be wiggly like this gif file, but it would have waviness in the reflected rose!
Well, anyway, I never did get that tattoo. Probably never will, but it's good that it's always possible IF I ever felt the need to break out of this shell and do something daring and adventurous!
I dunno. If I got a tat, it probably would be jiggly like that file and not in a good way. LOL
ReplyDeleteI have days when I really think about getting a tattoo, mostly as an in-your-face way of saying that there are more sides to me than people guess. But I'll never do it because it's so permanent.
I think I'm the only one of my friends that isn't inked. I like tats as an art form...on other people. Looking in the mirror now? I'm glad I didn't do it.
ReplyDeleteA few years ago, when I turned 50 i got a tattoo!! I had asways wanted one, but like you I thought it wasn't really acceptable for women to have one...unless you were a hard-core-biker chick or something eqyally lane. lol
ReplyDeletebut I did it and I've never once regretted it. I love sunflowers and ladybugs...plus a host of other objects...but those two seemed to go together for me. So, on my left inside ankle is a sunflower with a little ladybug on one of the leaves. It was my present to myself. I told the tat artist that I finally felt grownup enough, at 50, to know whether I wanted one or not. ;)
It's addicting though. Now I want another.
So, for my next one , it'll be a pink Flamingo with mine and Lovee's initial on it. Seriously! Now I just have to figure out where to put it. I want to be able to see it so my shoulder is out of the question...and as you said....with age comes...um...sagging? lol So I have to be mindful of that.
I didn't think it really hurt either. No worse than a sunburn.
Good luck with your decision. :)
