...and was it ever cold! It never got above single digits and I think it's around 2° right now. It's going to be cold tomorrow too, with more snow. I loved the weather the other day, it got up to around 47° and was so nice! At least it stayed light out there until around 5:30pm tonight. Well, it wasn't really light, but just not all the way dark yet. That's a hopeful sign. I'll have to dig up my sunrise calendar so I can keep tabs on the times. I just live for the time I don't have to go to work in the dark every morning. The problem is, it gets there and then we go on daylight savings time and I lose the early daylight again for a while. If you're interested go to Sunrise Calendar. You have to find your area and it will tell you what times the sun will rise and set each day of the month in your neck of the woods.
We cleaned one closet today. I had hoped to get a couple of them done, but the first one was pretty bad. It held all kinds of buried treasure. And some not-so-treasure too. It's done and neat and all the things that weren't needed upstairs were shipped to the basement to live in a tote. I love those big plastic totes. They are so useful and they stack so nicely. Not only that, but they keep our stuff safe from floods in the basement. Altho we only have one about every 500 years, when they come, they really screw things up!
We have Dad all weekend. It was so cold out, instead of bringing him over here and making him go out in the cold, we bundled up the dog and ourselves and went to see him. We took him supper from the deli and ate with him. We had Ruebens, nice steamy hot ham and bean soup and Dad and Andy had spice cake and chocolate cake respectively. I just watched them eat the cake and tried not to drool too much. I opted for a salad to go with my meal instead of cake. Go me! We may try to get him over here tomorrow. I'll make him a nice dinner!
The chickens are doing well. I have one who has stopped laying completely. I'm not sure why, but I thought they were all going to start to molt and when they do that, they quit laying. So I've been telling people not to count on eggs for much longer. They take time off from laying when they are trying to grow back their new feathers. Then after a couple months they will begin to lay again. Of course, since I've told 2 or 3 new customers that I may not have eggs for a while, we got 10 eggs yesterday and 9 today!!! That's pretty darned good for 11 chickens since they normally average laying one egg per hen per day. So I guess I'll be able to fill these orders I have. Chickens...you can't trust them!!! They'll make a liar out of you every time!! And just so you know, we have a heater in the shed with the coops and they are staying warm and toasty. We even had good enough weather the other day to clean the coops out. It was a long time over-due! Maybe that made the girls happy enough to get them popping out those eggs full time again.
I had the nicest surprise today. While Andy and I were slaving away cleaning, the phone rang and it was my dear online friend Rosemary from South Carolina. We had a great chat. It was so nice to hear her soft southern accent. She sounds like someone from Gone With The Wind. Like a true southern belle! She's just the most precious lady.
Well, I'm going to go chill for a while. And when I say "chill" I mean I'm going to try to get UNchilled! That means getting into my velour nightgown and under my fuzzy blanket.
Oh Ginni - just thinking about that kind of cold makes me ache! I don't know how you do it - it's only in the 30's here - and my fingers and toes are cold all the time!
ReplyDeleteI am so proud of you for having a salad instead of cake. Way to go. :P
Hope you and the chickies, and Andy & your Dad stay warm.
love -

Aw, you and Rosemary chatted! Awesome...
ReplyDeleteStay warm, girl. Your ham and bean soup sounds so good.
XOXO
What a productive and pleasant day you had. How thoughtful of you to not make your dad go out in that cold. The Reubens and soup sound yummy.
ReplyDeleteOh, Ginni, from the sound of all that COLD, I loved hearing about your nice toasty warm dinner with your dad and that lovely cake (that you didn't have!). And bravo to the chicas for keeping that egg production going!
ReplyDeleteThe snow missed us yesterday, but it's not lookin' good for today. ;P
ReplyDeleteHey! I'm still waiting to hear how your homemade face stuff works and if you'll give us the recipe!
It is cold, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteI didn't get around to doing any cleaning at all yesterday. I spent hours getting together a portfolio / resume for a possible new assignment.
I'm so glad it doesn't get that cold here. When it gets in the teens and 20's we're all complaining like crazy. I think I've seen at most about 1/4 inch of snow all season. I want one good snow. Just one. On my day off.
ReplyDeleteAre you loving your new iPhone? Do you have any favorite apps? It's still a thrill to me. Besides my laptop its my very favorite toy.
Everyone seems to be doing their "Spring" cleaning right now. I think it's the cold. You get cooped up for too long and it makes you want to nest a bit. Hm. Chicken references unintented. :)
ReplyDeleteNest is right! I don't want to have to go out much at all, if I don't have to. I'd even rather clean than go out! So you know how bad it is. LOL
ReplyDeleteI wish you were closer so we could split chicken orders. We have to buy 25 at a time, more than we can use. I'd rather know the home that the extra chicks were going to!
ReplyDeleteI do too Brad! That would be cool to have someone to share an order with so we know the others are getting a good home! We do have a hatchery about 60 miles from us and that's where I got most of ours. We drove tho, so they wouldn't have to be shipped. And our farm store has one day in the spring that they sell chicks. And there are a couple of other farm stores about 50 miles from here that sell chicks too.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE hearing about your chickens!!! It just sounds so fun to me.
ReplyDeleteAnd Bless your heart....you had salad instead of cake??!! Gurl.........youz got a lotta will power! Just thinking about chocolate makes me drool....( hang on I gotta get a tissue...)
I read you skin cream recipe. Sounds wonderful!!! You're a very clever gal!
