As per Sally's request I'm going to do a short report on how the facial cleanser I made is working. And I'll share the recipe.
First of all, it's working great. My face feels so soft after I use it. I wouldn't really even need moisturizer at night, but I use some a couple times of the week anyway. I think that due to the glycerin I added, it's stayed in the same consistency it was when I first whipped it up. It's very creamy and nice.
The only "con" about the whole thing was that it smells like olive oil...which to me smells sort of like a cross between ass and feet! That really doesn't bother me that much because I only use it when I'm taking my makeup off at the end of the day anyway, and usually going right to bed. But I decided to try it with three different scents to help cover up the olive oil smell.
I made 3 new batches after the initial one that smelled like olive oil. I made one with rose water, one with lilac water and one with Dr. Bronner's Peppermint castile soap. I liked the peppermint the best and it adds a bit of tingle and we could all use a little tingle, don't you think? Rose and lilac water don't have a lot of oomph! If the smell of olive oil doesn't bother you...I just live with it...then all the smelly stuff isn't necessary. Anyway, here's the recipe, for what it's worth. I love the way my skin feels after I use it...it's worth a try!
Olive Oil Skin Cleanser
1/2 C. extra virgin olive oil
1/2 tsp. Vitamin E oil
2 tsp. Dr. Bronner's Castile soap (pure or peppermint) or Baby Magic soap
2 tsp. rose or lavender water (if you use the peppermint soap or baby soap alone, use 1 tsp. pure water too)
2 Tbsp. glycerin
Mix all ingredients together with an immersion blender until smooth and creamy looking. Put in a clean bottle or jar.
To use: Pour a little into your hand and massage into your face. Wash off well with a warm wash cloth. This stuff takes off even the most stubborn waterproof mascara with no trouble.
Let me know if you try it and if so, how you like it, okay?
Is the Dr. Bronner's a powder? Did you have to order that off the internet? The rest of it sounds fairly easy to find.
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed that you can still smell the olive oil after you'd washed it off... I originally though it was kind of a lotion that you kept on. I'm so glad you found something simple and effective!
ReplyDeleteI'm impressed! You and Estee Lauder.
ReplyDeleteFiwa, Dr. Bronner is a liquid castile soap. It's very mild and works great in this. I got it online because I couldn't find it locally. Amazon has it.
ReplyDeleteAnne, no it's a rinse off thing. A cleanser to remove makeup without drying out the skin.
Kathy, Ms. Lauder has nothing to worry about!
"...ass and feet." HAHAHAHA! You telling me Andy likes kissing ass? (OMG - I crack myself up!)
ReplyDeleteWell, that sounds simple enough. Della (my daughter) is an Aveda trained estheologist (sp?) and she can get you any type of extract/oil you want in Des Moines. I would think lavendar oil would work better than lavendar water. Also, I'm trying to remember here, but your base oil could be something else. (WHAT IS THE NAME?) Rats. CRS strikes again. I'll think of it. Although olive oil is really good for your skin. (Baby oil? I wonder if that's what I'm thinking of? It sure would smell better.)
ANYwho, thanks for the recipe Ginni. I do need something to remove this stubborn water-proof mascara. (Now glycerin...where the heck can I get that? Hmmm....you got me thinkin' here kiddo.)
Sally, you can get glycerin at Walmart or a drug store. It was actually one of the easier things to find! I thought about using something better for a base, but I really wanted to try olive oil because it's in a lot of really high-end facial cleansers and lotions and that was the reason I tried this myself. I didn't want to pay $60 for olive oil stuff!!! I can live with the smell, it's not really that bad...but LOL on what you said about Andy...I'll tell him!! hahaha Lavender water didn't work very well...neither did rose water. I'm going to try some perfume oil I have next time I make a batch.
