Wow there are deer everywhere this year. They are in the process of harvesting the corn and it's kicking up all kinds of deer.
I have to go to work in the morning while it's still dark and I see deer all along the roads. It scares the willies out of me, since I've hit one before and don't care to ever do that again!!
I was driving a large Chevy pickup truck when I hit the deer years ago. I had just traded my Camaro in on the truck and it wasn't two weeks later I hit the deer!! My Camaro had glass T-tops and it would have been deadly for me if I'd hit it with that little low-riding car. As it was it did a lot of damage to my truck. I was very lucky. One of my husband's deer-hunting friends drove by a few minutes after I had hit the deer. My husband was working 2nd shift and it happened at 5pm in the evening, just before dark. The friend had been out deer hunting and was coming home because it was just beginning to get dark. He saw me and pulled over, threw the deer in the back of his truck and took it home to field dress it. We shared the deer and put it in the freezer. I labeled it "Road Kill".
Anyway, I have seen more deer this year than ever before. I'm glad they allow deer hunting according the deer population and hope the hunters have great luck this year in thinning out the population. One of our mechanics at the bus garage got a 12-point buck the other day. He still has a couple of doe tags left and will get them this weekend. I love when he gets deer because he always gives me a few packages of meat. There's nothing like a good pot of venison chili!
Yep - a ton of deer, but hardly any pheasants. The hunters around here didn't have much luck this year. Too wet of spring, I guess. I've never hit a deer (knock on wood) but have come close. I love my truck with the big grill guard. That's the only thing I drive anymore. LOL
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend Ginni.
I just saw a small herd of doe and a couple of 'young uns' this morning in our back yard. They've incorporated themselves into our housing areas (We're not very far from DC or Baltimore.) so it's very difficult to cull the herds safely. The authorities have allowed hunting close residential areas on special days. It's closely 'policed' and hunters are very careful. They can either keep the meat or donate it to food banks.
ReplyDeleteLuckily, we don't have deer running around here in the desert, but in the higher elevations of Arizona, there are signs warning of deer crossing the road. I guess that's one price for having lots of trees and vegetation. It's beautiful, but it produces hazards.
ReplyDeleteYour whole ordeal sounds scary. I don't know if I could eat the Road Kill after that scare.

My older son got an 8 point Saturday - I still have meat left from last year's bounty! Gotta get on cooking that, LOL...
ReplyDeleteHe and my DH saw 13 deer that morning.
Your killing me here. "Road Kill" I haven't laughed so hard in a long time.
