My sis Marsha texted me while I was on my school bus Friday morning and said "Come join the Y today". I didn't have my gym bag with me but I did have my checkbook...so I went and joined! I'm so excited. After sis took me on a tour (they've changed it a lot since I used to be a member, 7 yrs ago) I did a short workout with my sister. I love their elliptical machines and their recumbent bikes. They are sure a lot easier on the old joints than some of my exercise equipment! I walked a couple laps on the track and did some upper body work on the weight machines, along with the elliptical and the bike. Not much yet, but I can feel it already.
I can't keep up with sis, who is a faithful exerciser. For a short lady, she walks faster than anyone I know! She was passing everyone on the track and in about the same amount of time that she rode the bike 3 miles...I only did one!!! I told her not to wait for me, but to just do her thing. In a few months, maybe I'll be more able to keep up with her, but in the meantime, I'll be slogging along at my own pace. I want to get into shape, not kill myself!! And I don't want to slow her down, either.
I can't wait to swim...that's primarily why I wanted to join the Y. I got my locker lock today and material to make a large and a small towel specially for my gym bag. I also found a pair of flip flops at Hobby Lobby. No one else has them! I guess there's not much demand for flip flops this time of year. It works out great because the swim schedule has lap swims during the time I'll be able to be there everyday. I plan on going right from work to the Y after my first bus route, 4 days a week. One consideration to joining the Y is that I live out a ways from the town where the Y is and with gas prices, I didn't want to drive too far. Then I realized that I could easily go in the morning right after my first shift of work and it would save a lot of miles. I can workout, swim, use the saunas and hot tub, shower and get home for a couple hours before I have to be back to work.
We're getting the basement done and soon I'll have all my exercise equipment set up once again. I'll use my own little gym on days when I'm not going to the Y. I have a machine that has a stepper, arm apparatus, leg lift apparatus and weight bench on it. I have a whole range of free weights, a Nordic Track ski machine and a stationary bike. It will be nice to keep up with the weight-lifting workouts at home. They have Cybex circuit machines at the Y that I'll use and then do the free weights at home. I love my Nordic Track and weight bench but hate my stationary bike. When ever I use it, I feel like I need to have the seat surgically removed. I'm not even sure I'm getting that out of storage or not yet. Of course, I have my treadmill. It's been my best exercise friend for the past 4 months. I think it's going to stay upstairs so I can use it without having to go to the basement. It's great for a quick aerobic workout.
Big talk for a couch potato,eh? But I've put my money where my mouth is and intend to see this thru. I want to be fit again.
You're on your way! I wonder how your finger will like being wet? You'll find out. Did you get a swim cap and goggles? You'll need them. I can't wait to hear your progress.
ReplyDeleteDo you get spam here? Not many people have word verification anymore. I often post a comment, then notice I didn't fill the WV in and it didn't get posted and I'm too lazy to write a repeat comment.
Good for you Ginni! Both Algona and Emmetsburg have wonderful Y's - and both are about 20 miles away. Needless to say, there ain't no way I'm driving 20 miles in the middle of winter to go work out. Your schedule sounds perfect.
ReplyDeleteYeah - it's hard to keep up with another person, I think the fun is in seeing them there and talking in between and stuff. Swimming - I am so jealous! Hardly any of the health clubs around here have a pool. Have fun and enjoy the water.
