Tink Week...Friday's report

Friday is my "dad day" for the weekdays. I take care of my elderly dad. He is living in a senior village and there are quite a few residents living there. When I got there yesterday an opportunity presented itself to help someone. It was an elderly gentleman who was there to visit but wasn't sure how to get in touch with the person he was visiting, so he could get let in the door. I showed him how to work the security system to get a hold of his friend and what to do. Not a big thing but he was a bit baffled and was very grateful for the help. Older people seem to be much more appreciative of a kindness than younger people. Maybe that's something we should all think about when someone helps us.

Other than that, it was pretty much just another day of traffic-related good deeds once again. I liked the feeling I had all week and plan to try to at least watch for chances to help people and give them a hand when I can.

Party Pooper

We went to my BIL's birthday party last night. It was a great party but I realized that I'm just such a fuddy duddy! I was ready to go home and to bed by 9pm!!! I was having a nice time but I'm such a homebody and creature of habit, by 9pm, since I'm used to going to bed around then, I started yawning and getting tired. It's probably because I had been up since 5am. We actually ended up staying until 10:30pm or so, but I think I need to get out more!!

Brugmansia...aka Angel Trumpet

Last night my BIL started talking about the beautiful brugmansia bushes he has in his yard. He said they were very easy to grow and were pretty much fool-proof, as long as they didn't get the slightest bit touched by frost. In zone 5 (which we're in) they must be brought in before frost of any kind! I think they are a zone 10 plant...think Florida and Southern California! He gave me a cutting from one of his plants and I just have to keep it in water indoors until it roots, then put it in dirt. And in the spring when all chances of frost are gone, I'll plant it outdoors. They get huge and when they bloom there is nothing prettier!! The blooms are huge and are a beautiful shade of peach with soft green. They look like they're quilted.

So, it looks like we have a new "pet" for the winter. I just hope it's as hardy as my BIL says they are....I tend to cause house plants to commit suicide.

  1. Ginni, on the original plant, do the flowers point up or down? If up, it's a "devil's trumpet" and if down, it's an "angel's trumpet" ~ not a big deal but when my mom told me that, I thought it was cool.
    XOXO

  2. My g/f in Ft. Dodge grows brugs in her back yard and they are stunning. I've got an email she sent me of them growing one year if you want to see them. The flowers grow down and they're huge! She says they look like they're dead every year in the basement, but really take off when she puts them out in the spring. They grow over 6 ft. tall! She's tried to get me to take a start for years, but I just don't want a plant I have to take in and babysit all winter. If you like, I get put you in touch with her. She's really nice and I'm sure she'd be happy to give you a start if you like.

  3. It did make for a nice week, didn't it?

I love those flowers, they remind me of a day lily.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend.

  4. These are definitely Angel Trumpets...they point down on the mother plant and there are a bazillion blooms on his huge plants. I just took some pix of the start Gary gave me in their living room, that's why the blooms are sticking up. I would have taken a shot or two of the mother plant but but it was dark outside. Thanks for the info Sis, I'll have to look up Devil's Trumpet. I wonder if that's the same as Jimsonweed? They are beautiful and have the same flowers but they seem to point up...they grow as weeds around here and are very poisonous...so are these (I just found out!!) I'll have to be sure to plant these inside my fence so no neighbor kids get into it!!

Sally, thanks a million for the offer, but I can get all the starts I need from Gary (My BIL). I have some hesitation about trying this too, but it's so pretty, I'll give it a shot...even tho it is a diva! LOL. What color are your friends? I know they come in all different colors.

Yes Ruth, they sure are pretty!!

Fiwa, it has been a good week and I've learned that I should always do good deeds, they make me feel so good.

  5. Aw, you've been doing better than me at the good deeds. I've tried. But the only places I seem to be able to make a difference are on the roads, usually just by letting other drivers in.

Sis: I've never heard of that. How cool! I'll have to see which way Hoop's Grandmother's flowers grow. :)
