Sunflowers, goldfinches and other bright yellow things

After we planted our little veggie bed, it wasn't long until three stems of volunteer sunflowers started to come up from the compost we used as a planting medium. They grew well and got pretty big, even so much that they overshadowed some of the purposely planted things in the gardens. I left the sunflowers tho... I had something in mind when I did. Every time we've had sunflowers, we've had goldfinches. This time of the year the males are as beautiful and brightly colored as the sunflowers themselves and they're bold enough to let me photograph them! I wasn't disappointed! In fact, when I realized I needed a good, new photo of a wild bird for the fair, I put up a chair in the yard, next to the gardens and just waited. It didn't take long and I got quite a few shots of these brave little birds. They didn't seem the least bit afraid of me. Here are a couple of the shots.

Here's also one of a goldfinch in the mini-rose bed. I could say I just left the small thistles grow so I could attract the pretty finches...but they are there from neglect, not design. However, I was happy to see the goldfinches liked the thistle seed from these weeds too! That gives me an excuse NOT to pull those weeds!

Golden Breakfast

We had a lovely breakfast today. Here's the first peak we had at what was inside of one of our eggs...I love how high the white is and how the yolk sits high on top of it.

I fried them in a combination of butter and canola oil...

They were so fresh and good! Had them and some fried green tomatoes for breakfast! Andy said he thought it was nice that we could have breakfast from our our "farm"!

Those yolks were so golden and yummy! (I wonder how many other people take pictures as they eat??)

  3. I second what nik said - those EGGS! The color of that yolk! Even the ones I got at the farmer's market this summer weren't that pretty.

The gold finches are pretty too - we don't get anything nearly that exotic looking around here. Though I do have one sunflower coming up - so maybe later in the fall?

    Have a yellow day!

  6. Hi and thanks everyone!

Sis, I thought of you when I asked how many other people take pix as they eat! LOL

Brad, the goldfinch is the Iowa state bird too...I live on the border of Illinois and Iowa, in Illinois. But we have a load of them every summer. Especially if we grow sunflowers!

Nik, Fiwa and Ruth...those eggs were so good. I forgot how good really fresh eggs are! The worst part is having to wait a few days to get enough of these small eggs for breakfast. We got one more after breakfast, so we only have to wait for 5 more!
