Silliness

Something kind of silly I wrote

I wrote this a few years ago. I happened to run across it while looking for some document files on my computer. It describes the way I feel some days when I’m off work for the summer. It’s also a little insight, embarrassingly enough, into the scattered way my mind works sometimes. Especially on a lazy summer day.

A Lazy Summer Day©
By Ginni D

One day I was so lazy but I knew there were a million things to do in the rose garden and I felt a flush of denial as I thought of it all. “It will all be there when I decide I want to do it”, I told myself. After sitting around most of the morning watching TV… The View, Martha Stewart…you know the shows, I remembered that I had left my favorite huge iced tea glass outside yesterday. I decided I could muster enough energy to just step outside and get it off the table on the deck, after all, it was getting hot and I was really craving some cool tea. So, I dragged my lazy self down the steps that led to the back deck and something caught my eye. I had left my good Felco pruners on the potting bench yesterday and knew there was rain forecast. I figured I could work up just a little more energy. So, I made it down the deck steps and took my precious pruners in my hand, to rescue them from a certain rusty death, should the rain come before I get out here again. As I looked up, I spotted that long cane on the Liebeszauber rose that I had been meaning to prune off, and with the possible storm and wind coming tomorrow, I decided since I already had the pruners in my hand, I may as well shorten that errant cane. So I worked up the gumption to walk over to the rose and easily snipped off the cane. Gee, I‘m so glad I saved my pruners from demise, these things are expensive but I can see why… they sure work well! The Queen Elizabeth rose was blooming nicely so while I was there I snipped a couple of roses to put on the dinner table tonight. Oh, and she had a few spent blooms too, so I thought I may as well deadhead her while I was there, it couldn’t hurt and I can find a bit more energy. I can never figure out how weeds grow so quickly. While deadheading QE, I notice the circle bed she reigns over was beginning to look like a tiny maple forest, since all those little helicopter thingys that fall off the maple trees had taken root. I thought I had gotten all of those a long time ago. Not in my rose bed you don’t, and I began to pull them out. “Just a few” I told myself, “if you can find the energy”. Before I knew it the circle bed was de-forested and I had a handful of junk for the compost bin. Ok, just a little energy needed here. I walked over and tossed the handful of baby trees into the compost bin when I noticed that those two potted roses near the bin looked a bit peaked. I’ve been meaning to move those into better sun! It will only take a moment. As I moved the roses, I noticed that there were Japanese beetles on the Charlotte roses again! Damn bugs! They sure go for those light colored roses! Luckily the butter dish full of soapy water was sitting on the bench right beside the Charlotte bed. How much energy could it take to pitch a few JB’s to a soapy death? Might as well cut a few Charlottes too, since the beetles will just eat them anyway. And deadheading them wouldn’t hurt either. The pale yellow Charlotte blooms will look quite nice with the pink QE blooms. While I was tossing the last beetle in the briny deep, I looked around and realized the hanging baskets of petunias were looking a bit limp. Water! Well, the catch barrel is right there, it’s not like I have to carry water very far to get to them. Not much energy needed here, either. And while I’m watering them, I may as well pick out the maple twirlies that fell into the pots and started to make a home. Maybe I should be growing maple trees, they sure grow easily; more junk for the compost bin. Walking to the bin, I noticed the clematis was drooping a bit due to lots of new growth, so I grabbed the little white tie straps I stashed under the roof of the shed for just this sort of emergency, and figured it won’t take long to just quickly tie up Jackmanii’s new growth; nothing difficult about that. Well, I thought I’d better get the cut roses in the house before they wilt in the hot sun and get them in a vase. As I crossed the deck, I pulled some weeds from the flower boxes and dropped them in the garbage can we have just for weeds. I dragged my lazy self back into the house, did the underwater cuts on the rose stems and put them lovingly into a vase. They did look very nice on the table. As I sank back down into the recliner clicker in hand, prepared to watch Oprah, I realized I was so tired and thirsty. Can’t imagine why, I haven’t done a thing all day! Now, where did I leave that big iced tea glass??

  1. That's exactly the way I get in the garden sometimes. One thing leads to another . . .

Ginni, I wish I could say I was that kinda lazy. I'm the real kind that says, "aw... the glass is plastic, it can sit outside for another day!"

    lovins!
