Monday...Odd Shots, etc.

Well today is the last day of my short break. I'm in pursuit of a new hobby. After watching the Food Network's show Unwrapped and seeing a segment on the Ukrainian art of egg decorating called Pysanky, I want to try it! I'm on my way to Hobby Lobby today to see if I can find any info or supplies. I ordered a book from Amazon and will see if it's anything I can do. I have collected decorative eggs for years and have always thought these Ukrainian eggs were wonderful. After seeing how they are done, I am itching to give it a try myself. If you know anything about these...let me know!

Odd Shots

Today is Odd Shots Monday! Yesterday we spent Easter with my family at my sister's place. She has a couple of kitty kids and I took some pictures of them for her. This is my odd shot offering for today...

Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the living room...who rears his frightening head...TERMINATOR KITTY (cue up the Jaws music)

  3. Oh you have made my day! So funny!

My mother has a box of those decorated eggs in her living room. They were made by my half sister who disassociated herself from us so I can't ask how she made them. I'll ask my mother today if she can remember any thing about how she learned.

  12. Guess who knows how to make the eggs? Me! I have all the stuff, though it's been years since I've made any. I went to a demonstration years ago in the mountains, and bought the supplies: the tool, beeswax and instructions. I loved making them. Very detailed and painstaking work. Right up my ally.

  13. Sorry I missed this yesterday. The best eggs are direct from a farm, the commercial ones will have gone through a special wash and don't colour as well. Rubber bands make great guides for getting a straight line and use pencil very lightly. Hold the wax stylus lightly like a pen and take your time.

Once you have done all the dying and are removing the wax be careful not to scorch the egg. I never bothered to blow my eggs out after. Most of the time, they will just dry up, but every once in awhile one will explode and you lose the art. Blowing them out you also take a chance at losing the art, so ...?

Put the baby finger of the hand holding the stylus against the hand holding the egg to help steady it and your lines should be fairly smooth. Remember that the construction of an egg is very strong so you can apply a fair amount of pressure. Oh and keep the wax stylus full and hot. Post pictures when you are done.

Hope that helps. Love the cat terminator picture!
