Harry Potter and the Lost Marketing Dollars

I thought we had all four Harry Potter movies that have been released so far, well I thought my son Jon had them. Jon said that after his divorce, when his ex gave him back all his movies (gave him back his movies, read: threw them out on the front lawn when he was supposed to be there one day to pick up the kids)... the kids had been messing with them and many of the cases he got back had no movies in them.

That's where the HP movies went.

Anyway, with this HP addiction I've got going right now, I really wanted to watch all 4 of the available movies before I go to the theater to see #5.

Now keep in mind that a HP book was just released and a HP movie was just released. You would think that finding the previous 4 movies would be a cinch...that stores would have stocked them up due to a sudden HP hyper-interest...wouldn't you? HA! WRONGO!!!

We went to a Target Store, a Walmart Store and even a Best Buy Store! There were a total of 3 HP movies in all of those stores and two of those were the same. Walmart had one, Best Buy had two and Target struck out all the way around. The movies all had to be dutifully dug out of the vaults by a bored worker bee in each store. We got movie #2 and #3 at Best Buy. The marketers for HP really missed the boat here, in my humble opinion! Wouldn't you think that with all these new releases they might just think that people would want to get re-acquainted with the old movies and would make them available??

Well we finally found #1 and #4 at a Blockbuster video, they were new and they weren't any more costly than they would have been at any of those other stores we were in. I'm exhausted but satisfied and my plans are made...it's going to be a Harry Potter evening. I'll watch a couple of the movies before I go to bed.... A couple more tomorrow and then go see #5 in the theater just as soon as I can.

In the meantime, I'm still working on the book...I have 270 pages left to read.

Thought for the day...

"Fame is a fickle friend, Harry."

  1. I'm having to back up too - I have never finished book #5 - so my son is going crazy because he can't talk about #7 that he just finished, haha.

  3. Gin I wonder if a lot of people wanted to do what you are doing and that's why you had a hard time finding the movies?

Maybe you were just late and they had all been bought already.

    maybe.
