I bet you do too!
It's the one day of the week when I am off work and don't have to go to work tomorrow!! I love that feeling, even tho I have a pretty cool job.
Maybe I should retire?? I could, I'm old enough or will be soon. I've been giving a lot of thought to it. But you have to understand that I have a great job and get paid good money. I also have pretty cushy hours, even tho I get up way before the crack of dawn but hey, I'm a morning person anyhow. I love my co-workers (for the most part) and really feel blessed to have a good boss.
So retirement is on my mind, but I am so afraid I'll really regret it if I do retire. I have a ton of hobbies, but how long would they keep me busy enough? Or would I be like a lot of other people I know and wonder how I ever found the time to work?
Well, it's been on on my mind, anyway. Saturdays always make me think of retiring.
Roses
For the past 10 years, when I think of Spring, I think of roses. Some years have been worse than others, but every Spring for the past decade, I have gotten roses. One way or another. Begged, borrowed, bought-and-paid-for, or stolen (well, if offering to prune an old man's roses, then keeping the stuff I pruned off can be considered stealing! Maybe a good deed gone wrong? Altho I think I actually DID tell him I was going to keep the stuff I pruned off. )
I've begged cuttings from people I know...or didn't know. But have never managed to get a cutting past the tiny, vulnerable stage. With the exception of one rose I thought was a good one until I studied it's leaves and realized it was a multiflora rose. Just what I DIDN'T need in my garden. So I tore the healthy little thing up by it's roots. Maybe that was Karma coming back to get me because of the aforementioned prunings.
I remember the year, a while back, when I took advantage of a glitch in the online ordering process at Wayside gardens. At the time I didn't know it was a glitch and just thought it was a super deal on roses, I found out later someone had screwed up while setting up the Wayside order system...but Wayside honored my order. Lot's of other peoples too I imagine, at least that was the word on the rose forum I frequented. I got around 70 or 80 roses...all for pennies! I think the most I ever paid for those roses was $3 each...most were way less. I was able to try all kinds of roses and found some I loved and some I didn't love so much.
Anyway, I always want new roses as Spring approaches. This year Andy got me some rose plants for Valentine's Day, instead of cut roses. He asked which I'd rather have. DUH! That's a no-brainer!! Valentine's Day is in the heart of Rose-Lust-Days!! Of course, I opted for rose plants that I can plant and savor, one lovely bloom at a time!! I haven't gotten them yet, but look forward to the day the UPS man comes with a big box of lovely roses...probably some time in May.
I'm going to spend some of the day today ordering some more from Jackson & Perkins. I have usually had pretty good luck with their roses and they have a few HT's I'm lusting for.
Sometime online mail-order is just too easy!!
Here's hoping that your weekend is lovely, where ever you are.
When we bought our house there were roses in the front garden and I promptly killed them! I'm just now getting into gardening, having been an apartment dweller my whole life. I think it will probably be a few years before I can do roses, but they are my favorite flowers. I love going to the botanical gardens and marveling at all the different varieties and shades. They are magnificent
ReplyDeleteGinni, so nice to see you back here again. And pining after roses. You must tell me which HTs have caught your eye. I was in the mood to replace some underperforming pinks last summer and, in my indecision, bought four or five possibilities: Charlotte Armstrong (she's in so many popular roses' ancestry...), Grandmother's Hat (which is supposed to really like my climate), a pair of Baronnes: Baronne Edmund Rothschild and Baronne Prevost, and one other I can't remember. I planted GH, but haven't decided who will fill the other available spot.
ReplyDeleteI think if you retire, you will do the latter: wonder how you found time to work before!
I can't imagine having enough room for that many roses! You lucky girl! I have the space, just not enough sun. I'll be looking forward to pictures though.
ReplyDeleteIf you still enjoy your job - keep doing it, but it should make you feel good to know you COULD retire if you wanted to. That's my 2 cents. However, my mother is the queen of retired people - she has a busier schedule than anyone I know - and she has a ball playing all sorts of games and going places with the senior center - so who knows? Do what feels right for you.
Love yoU!
GINNI'S BACK!!!
ReplyDeleteI love roses, too. In fact, yesterday, I cut all but two of them back -- way back. Today, the Big Guy will go out and spray dormant oil. I noticed some of the roses had cane borers. :(
I'm looking at the rainbow Knockout -- and a couple of others!!!! I have about 5 Knockouts already and they are so hearty and beautiful! I love the HTs but haven't been having as much luck. I wish I had known about that 'glitch'!!
I also order from Edmunds' Roses. Healthy plants and great service.
YAY and I'm getting rose lust too!
ReplyDeleteI'm so thrilled to see you.
XO
It's great to see all of you, too!
ReplyDeleteTotalBB, you should try growing roses in pots! I know lots of ppl who do that with great success. They just need some good sun, lots of water with good drainage, and a little 10-10-10 fertilizer or Miracle Grow once in a while! Oh, and winter protection if you live in a cold zone! They are easier than you think...if I can grow them, so can you!!
I love all kinds of roses and Kathy you are so right about Knockouts...they are soooo hardy and bloom constantly, all summer. They add so much color to the garden.
Anne, I ordered quite a few and most of them are the type with upright buds, long stems, good for showing and cutting...think: Marilyn Monroe, St. Patrick, Touch of Class, Gemini, Vet's Honor, Double Delight, etc. I like to take my roses to the fairs around the area to exhibit. I don't do very many real rose shows tho...LOL I did order J&P's new rose called Monkey Business too...it's a vibrant yellow floribunda. With the RRD we have rampant in this area, I almost have to think of my roses as annuals. Altho some of them seem to survive well.
Sis, are you getting any new roses this year? It's so easy for rose lust to get the best of us...LOL!!
Fiwa, if I do retire, I hope to be like your Mom. Busy, busy busy!!! :))
