If so this list may help you decide how much to tip your service people for Christmas.
It is from Consumer Report and gives you an idea of how much to tip.
Who gets tipped at the holidays:
Service - % of people who tip - Amount to tip
Cleaning person - 65% - $50
Child's teacher - 59% - $20
Hairdresser - 56% - $20
Child care person - 52% - $38
Manicurist - 51% - $20
Newspaper kid - 45% - $20
Barber - 40% - $15
Building super - 33% - $25
Pet Care Provider - 30% - $25
Mail Carrier - 29% - $20
Lawn care worker - 28% - $25
School Bus driver - 26% - $15
Fitness instructor - 22% - $25
Sanitation worker - 14% - $20
I put this up because I thought it was interesting. I always tip my hairdresser, at least $5 per haircut, so unless I get my hair cut over the holidays, I don't give her a special tip for Christmas. If I did get a haircut then, I would probably give her more than $5. I don't have a cleaning person, nor most of the service people on that list. We don't get the newspaper anymore, do all our own lawn work, I own my home so don't have a building super, no mail carrier since we get our mail in a post office box.
I found it interesting to see school bus driver on the list. I've never gotten a tip in the 10+ years I've been driving a bus. I always get a gift from the teachers who's special needs kids are on my bus and occasionally a gift from one of the kids, but generally I give the kids each a gift. I would probably feel funny if I got a tip. I don't even know if I could accept a gift of money. I'm not sure if it would be against school policy.
Do you get tips at Christmas? Or do you tip at Christmas?
well, by those standards...I should get about $150.00 from the parentals...lol
ReplyDeleteI tip...my Godchild was a waitress and she taught me the 'rules' of tipping. Now, at a restaurant, I just double the tax amount and give that. Works for me.
Happy weekend gal!
Oh, btw....I fed the turtles...then noticed I was late getting ready when I saw the clock!
ReplyDeletelol
I tip for each haircut (both mine and Smokey's), and I tip at restaurants. I don't do Christmas tips.
ReplyDeleteGin, I did just tip my hairdresser extra for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI also tip my postal worker.
I tend to overtip in restaurants if the service is good...I have had that gig and have empathy for it.
...tis the season.
xoxoxo
Like you, Ginni, I don't use many of the services listed. I always tip my hairdresser and at restaurants.
ReplyDeleteI would tip service people if we had them working for us steady. But now you have me thinking. There's a small asian grocery down the street with a great lady that runs it. She's a service person that provides great service, I think I'll take her a card and a tip.
ReplyDeleteIf I had someone working in my home, I'd give them a Christmas bonus - I used to have a sitter come to my home and she'd also do a little straightening up and laundry for me, and I tipped her at Christmas.
ReplyDeleteAs for the rest, I tip my hairdresser and waiters/waitresses all the time anyway. I just can't afford all those other tips, so many times I'm making cookies for teachers, etc.
That was an interesting read, though.
I get a lot of gifts and extra tips from my clients at Christmas. For a lot of them, I've been their hairdresser for many years. I always send a thank you card to them in the mail. I often get a few hundred dollars worth of Border's gift cards because so many people know I go there on Saturdays.
ReplyDeleteI give my postal worker a $20 Starbucks gift card every year. I give the shampoo assistants and receptionist in my salon a $5 Starbucks gift card.
