Steel Cut Oatmeal

I'm running late on time so I'm not going to post much today again.

One quick comment about steel cut oatmeal. We had our first bowl of the winter yesterday. I had forgotten how good it is! And it does so many things that are good for you.

1.) It's amazing comfort food and that always makes a winter day better.

2.) It lowers cholesterol.

3.) It gives you a great shot of fiber, which in turn helps regulate certain bodily functions.

4.) It's very satisfying.

5.) You can make it a few days ahead of time and keep it in the fridge and just re-heat it in the microwave, so it's even a great convenience food.

6.) With a little cinnamon or jam and some sweetener, it tastes wonderful.

You've got to try some...it's great!

I'm going swimming after my first shift of work today so I don't know if I'll have time for oatmeal today, but it's going to somehow be worked into my regular diet again...I just love it!

Have a wonderful day everyone.

  1. Oatmeal is hard for me to choke down; it's a texture thing. But I've been making myself eat it at least once a week for a few weeks, trying to have a breakfast that's healthy and will last. I guess it's time for me to try these steel-cut ones, Gin! lol

  2. I had to Wiki - I've wondered about this for a while:

Steel-cut oats are whole grain groats (the inner portion of the oat kernel) which have been cut into only two or three pieces. They are golden in colour and resemble small rice pieces.[1]

Steel-cut oats are also known as coarse-cut oats, pinhead oats, Scotch oats, or Irish oats. Scotch oats are a less coarse variation.

Steel-cut oats have a lower glycemic index than instant oats, with the disadvantage that the prep time is longer; steel cut oats take about 13-14 minutes on the stove top.

Now I'll give it a go!

  3. I should try my steel cut oats before they expire. That happens a lot here. I save the good stuff, then it goes to waste.

Did you read about my swim today? Well, my not-swam swim.

  4. Ginn, I love oatmeal in any form. (This includes cookies!) Brown sugar and raisins--YUM. I know what I'm having tomorrow for breakfast. Thanks :)
