As I said, I love to swim. It was mostly due to our having a cabin on beautiful Lake Okoboji in NW Iowa all our lives and that we've been going up there every summer since we were kids. My grandmother bought the property in 1929 for somewhere around $2,500 when my mom was just 7 years old. It had a model cabin on it that was for people to see if they wanted to purchase land with a cabin built on it. We spent most of our summers there during our childhood and swimming was what we did! In 1985, the year after my mom died, dad built a new cabin on the land and bought 4 more lots across the road and put a garage on that property. The whole place is now worth a whole hell of a lot more money than grandma originally paid for it, but we love it just the same and still go up there every year.
Here's the view from the front porch on our cabin.

This is Rosie looking out the window on our cabin porch. I swam across that bay a couple of times in my youth. I could still do it if I had a mind to!

The reason I'm talking about swimming is I got this website from a friend last night and it really was neat. It made me think of how long I've been swimming and how much I love it. And after a co-worker tragically losing her 3 year old grand baby to a pool drowning this summer, I thought it was so neat to see this...all babies should learn to swim and learn it early!!!
Check it out if you get a chance!

I love to swim - when I get in the water I just feel different... like that is where I am supposed to be. I wonder if that's some throwback to being in the womb?
ReplyDeleteI think it would be the most wonderful luxury in the world to have my very own indoor swimming pool. That would be heaven on earth for me.
I hope you go for that class Ginni, it sounds like fun.

I, unfortunately, swim like a rock and have often wished that I'd been taught as a baby. Enjoy your water aerobics!
ReplyDeleteI've heard swimming is really good for joints. Not so good for preventing bone lose, but great for people who have knee issues, etc. Unfortunately, I've never developed comfort in the water.
ReplyDeleteGosh, I wish we had a place like that cabin. My husband's grandmother had a place like that, but her brother sold it for a pittance after she died. Michael's oldest sister is still pissed about it. LOL
Sign up for water aerobics, you won't be sorry! You will burn more calories with that form of exercise than most! Low impact and the best of both, strength AND cardio.
ReplyDeleteI'm still looking for a place to swim indoors. Our high schools don't have it. I hope I find a place because I'm in love with the water. I worry that one of the things i love best is seeing the sky, though and I wouldn't have that at the places I've looked at. I'm really proud of you!a
ReplyDeleteGreat idea Ginni - get in that pool. You won't regret it. Mrs Malc and myself are taking up swimming again, although Sal's a steady-eddy breaststroker while I get very boy-competitive with other swimmers, so it won't be a shared activity (the quiet drink afterwards will be though).
