Egg Anomolies, Mermaids and War Ships

Egg Anomalies...

... abound in our coop lately.

First we got Super Egg...

Then I fried it up for Andy and look at what was inside...

Then we get these beautiful Pale Turquoise Eggs from one of our Easter Egger chickens...

Then yesterday Andy came in from checking the coop for eggs with this. It's a Teeny Tiny Egg. One of our other Easter Eggers must have laid it's first egg and here it is, in the basket with the some of the other eggs from yesterday, check this out...

Isn't that just the cutest thing you've ever seen, almost??

The most eggs we've gotten in one day so far is 7 and that was yesterday. So we have at least 7 out of 11 that are laying, so far. People at work are clamoring for eggs. I don't know if production will be able to keep up with demand...but that's okay. The idea is just to sell what I have extra. And I'll only sell the "normal" pretty eggs and I'll keep plenty for our own use. So I may have 2 or 3 dozen a week to sell. That will pretty much just pay for the chicken feed we go thru and that's cool.

Under The Sea ... Again

I went and picked up a copy of "Aerial's Beginning" this week. One of my favorite movies is "The Little Mermaid", so of course I had to have the sequel. Well, I'm not sure it's called a sequel when it's the story of what happened BEFORE the other movie. Anyway, I haven't had time to watch it yet...but that's one of the things on the agenda for this long weekend.

Projects

Speaking of the long weekend, I'm hoping to get a few projects done. We are going to build a small coop for the three wimpy younger chickens. They should be laying and are not yet and I think it's because they are in with the older chickens who sort of pick on them. I think they are a bit stressed out...so we decided to use some of our scrap lumber to put a small coop together. We are also going to build them a small runout pen so they can be outdoors when the weather is nice. The pen won't have a floor in it, so they can scratch around in the dirt as chickens should be able to do. It will keep us busy. But not too busy. We just want some time to veg, too. I will have dad over for supper and TV tonight and that's about as much as we have planned so far.

War Ships, LST's

Oh, one little jaunt we are planning to make is to go see the Navy LST WW2 war ship that has come up the Mississippi River to be on display for a few days. Andy used to be on ships similar to this one when he was in the Navy (He is a Viet Nam era vet...not WW2). It's docked in Moline for the weekend and I'd love to see it and get some photos. I'm not sure if we'll take the tour of it, but it would be fun to see it.

  1. It's been great following along on your chick to chicken to eggs by the dozen story. It's great that you have takers for the extra eggs and that it will pay for the feed. Do the eggs taste differently than store-bought?

The weekend is just a normal one for me...retail you know. I told my daughter it was a good thing we weren't planning on going to the beach because of the bridge closing. She pointed out we never go anywhere on Labor Day weekend.Oh, right.

    Enjoy yours!

  2. Wow, this seems to have happened so fast!

The pale turquoise eggs show up so nicely against the brown ones.

  4. One word of advice/caution: when you are raising your own chickens for eggs, always break each egg into a separate dish. To avoid "surprises" (like rotten eggs or chick fetuses) which would spoil whatever you are making with it. Voice of experience here...

Andy, my brother retired from the Navy too. He was a Chief Signalman and was in Viet Nam too. Enjoy the ship!

And have a great Labor Day you guys!

  5. Love those egg photos! You have some really brown eggs--I've not seen any this dark before. The blue ones are wonderful! Seeing all the various eggs takes me back to my childhood on the farm.

  6. Cheryl, it seems like it was just yesterday when the hens were chicks. But when I think about it, it seems like forever since we've been waiting for eggs! Have a good Labor Day!

Ruth, turquoise and brown was my mom's favorite color combination!

    Lenette..Chix R Us! haha

Sally, I always crack my eggs into a separate bowl before we put them into the pan. I don't have a rooster*** so there is no chance of having a half a baby chick in an egg...and we don't let them free-range so the eggs don't have a chance to get rotten...but they occasionally have a blood spot in them and I can't eat them like that. Those eggs and there have only been two like that so far out of around 85 eggs...those get fried, chopped up well and fed back to the chickens, along with their egg shells. Eggs are good for chickens too (albeit rather cannibalistic) and the shells give them back the calcium they lost laying the eggs in the first place. I told Andy about your brother...he laughed and said "Oh, her brother was a "scivvy waver"...LOL Whatever that means!!

Aiyana, there are chickens called "Cuckoo Marans" that lay even darker eggs. Mine are pretty dark tho...I love that color. They are darker than I imagined they would be! The shell colors are so cool ...they look like Easter eggs when they are in a basket together. I just love the colors...and it's odd but they all taste exactly the same...the nutrition is exactly the same too!

***Many people think you have to have a rooster to get eggs. But you don't...you just need a rooster to get chicks!
