Nectar from Heaven and other tasty delights...

My name is Ginni and I have a sugar addiction!

I have always had the worst sweet tooth. Have you ever tried dieting with a sweet tooth as bad as mine? It's a daunting task for sure!

Not only do I love to eat sweets, candy, cake, pie and gooey rich desserts, but I love to make them. Watching someone else eat a piece of cake loaded with yummy frosting and hearing them whine, "I can't finish this, it's too rich..." is laughable to me. Give it here....I'll finish it!! And a couple pieces of my own too.

With these thoughts in mind, I try to find anything I can that will quell my nagging sweet tooth, even when I'm on a diet. Fruit helps some, but it's generally not sweet enough and not that satisfying, in the great scheme of all things diety.

In my quest for sugary-like, harmless goodies, I have over the years found a few things that work and don't mess up my diet. One of them is Diet A&W Root Beer! ZERO calories, ZERO carbs, ZERO fat, but absolutely loaded with flavor and sweet (albeit, artificial ) root beery goodness, adding no unnecessary bumps on the road in my life-long journey to become a svelte sireeeen!

One other thing I've just recently discovered is that I can have my sweet pickle and eat it too! While grocery shopping and getting the stuff to make wraps recently, the store was out of sweet gherkins! YIKES!! I can't have a wrap without cream cheese and those tasty, SWEET, chubby little nuggets of pickle! Andy bent down and reached under and way back on the shelf and came up with a jar of "no sugar added" sweet gherkins. YUCK, I could only imagine what they tasted like! But okay, I decided that nothing ventured, nothing gained and got them. OMG, they were so perfectly tasty and if you didn't know they were sugar-free, well...you wouldn't know! I had no idea they made sugar free sweet pickles! They were so good, I got a jar of them for my sister and she loves them too. Now both of us buy them up in mass quantities and keep jars in our cupboards, hidden away from the un-initiated in our households... non-dieters who wouldn't appreciate the difference in a pickle that has 50 calories from one that has ZERO calories! My wraps will never be on the fattening side of being diet food again!

One other thing I have to mention is True Lime, True Lemon and True Orange! These are little flavor packets of powder that are similar in size to a packet of Splenda, my sweetener of choice. They are a powerhouse of flavor and add a great touch to diet soda, iced tea, recipes, even just a glass of water. I love the lime and use it in my Diet Pepsi and iced tea, all the time. The packets aren't sweetened, but just very concentrated lime (lemon or orange) flavor. They make my diet-life so much more interesting. Altho the lemon and orange are good...I loveLoveLOVE lime!

  1. LOL, Ginni, I can relate to the struggle to find acceptable alternatives.

I've been taking a different approach. I'm finding that the more sugar I cut out and the more whole grains I add, the less insistent my sweet tooth becomes. I think sweeteners are addictive. The other day I drank some commercially prepared iced tea that was sweetened with honey, and within an hour I was ravenously hungry. That was the first time that's happened since I went on the new diet.

I'm not suggesting you take the same approach. I think I was just relating to the addictive power of suger.

  2. It's the salty things that bother me, though we do love diet A&W too - it is good.

I'll have to remember that about the no sugar added gerkins - Clarke loves sweet pickles.

    lovins!

  4. The True Lime really sounds like something good for my tea. I've never seen this anywhere--where do you find it in the store? I'll have to get some if I can find it!
