The roses came by messenger yesterday while I was elbow deep in garden dirt. I got my 2 raised veggie beds planted and all I need to plant is one or two cherry tomatoes which I don't have yet. I was so happy to get it all done. While the chickens played in their outdoor pen and I was planting the gardens, Andy got the walkway done between the beds. He put in two rows of those 12" patio blocks. It will make it nice if it's muddy or wet so I won't have to walk in mud to tend to my gardens. And we both got done in the knick of time. It started to rain last night about 9pm and hasn't let up since. At last check of the rain gauge, we had well over an inch of rain already. It's not supposed to stop until this evening. I sure hope my poor little seeds don't get washed away! But it's been a pretty gentle rain so far.
Actually the rain came at the perfect time. The garden is planted, the new grass seed out where the trees were brought down a couple years ago needed a good watering. Besides the veggies, I just planted all my hanging baskets and a few pots of herbs and flowers. Andy had just spread weed-feed all over the outer lawn and it had been on the grass/weeds long enough to get the weeds and now it needed to be washed down into the ground to do the feed part of it's job!
I planted the beds in square foot sections and I was amazed at how much they held. In just a little over 3 weeks, I should be harvesting radishes and green onions. Maybe even some lettuce and spinach, altho I think they take a bit longer.
Here's a great recipe that my Dad swears he invented* (it's not too healthy what with all the butter and salt...but there ARE veggies, and that counts for something!) back when he was a boy, this was great depression food!
Radish Sandwich
2 slices of white bread
butter or margarine
3 or 4 good sized radishes** sliced thinly
Salt to taste
Spread a good hefty layer of butter on each slice of bread. Make sure you do both slices so the butter can hold in the radishes. Then layer the radish slices all over one slice of the bread until it's well covered with a double layer of radishes. Salt to your taste and then put the top slice of bread on the sandwich. Press it down so the butter can smush down into the radish layers. Cut the sandwich in two with a sharp knife. Enjoy!
**A big thick slice of sweet onion, big enough to fit all the way across the bread is an alternative sandwich filling. Proceed the same as if you were making a radish sandwich. Yeah, Dad claims to have invented this one, also!
*I've had at least 3 friends parents say they invented this sandwich, so the jury is still out on who actually did invent it. I'm thinking it was probably necessity that invented it. This, along with a lot of other interesting depression-era dishes.
We're going to a Survivor party tonight. It's the final episode and we usually get together with family and friends to watch. Of course there will be food. I'm taking a pan of my homemade mac and cheese and I don't know what else. I'll get the groceries in a little while. It'll be a good day to spend indoors cooking and watching movies. We have a couple new ones we haven't had time to watch yet.
Happy Mother's Day to you! - Give Rosie a cuddle for me. Hope you had a good day!
ReplyDeleteParvati! Crap! I wanted Amanda to win!!!
ReplyDeleteMy husband and mother both invented the radish sandwich also :), I love mine dipped and covered in salt, I dip them in water first so they hold lots of salt :).
