Good food

I just read an article about 5 foods that help you live longer (assuming you don't get hit by a bus) by lowering your cholesterol. They were as follows:

Soy: I can eat tofu and in fact, I love a certain salad that features tofu. The recipe...

Extra-firm tofu, cut into small cubes
Equal parts of leek and celery cut into thin slices
Coarsely chopped cilantro
Small sprinkling of sea salt
Toss the entire salad with a few dashes of sesame oil.

It's very filling, very yummy IF you like all of the above ingredients, and it's even health/diet-wise!

Almonds: I love them, and I'm pretty sure they don't mean the honey-sugar-syrup roasted variety! So it's a good thing I love just plain old almonds! I can get unsalted, unroasted bags of almonds in the Oriental grocery store. Comparatively, they are very cheap and you can add your own seasonings to them as you roast or pan fry them! They're yummy cooked in an iron frying pan with a tablespoon of brown sugar and a pinch of sea salt on them!!

Oatmeal: We are really into the steel-cut oats. They are amazingly good. It takes longer to cook them, but they're worth it. If you haven't tried them, you have to give them a go. They are nuttier, "bitier", and really clean you out...if you get my drift! I highly recommend John McCann Steel Cut Oatmeal (NOT to be mistaken for the US Senator/politician/veteran John McCain!!)...it's in a silver metal can and can be found in most grocery stores. You can also order great steel cut oats on Amazon dot com from Honeyville Farms. Reasonably priced, even with shipping!

Fish: Including salmon, tuna and halibut. I've never been much into fish. I love most seafood, but fish was thrust upon me so much when I was a kid (Dad was a fisherman extraordinare and we had fish, fish and more fish...it was an affront to him if you didn't like it...so we ate it.). Andy does make killer salmon patties, but I'm not sure they're talking about canned salmon here!

Red Wine: Oh yeah!! Bring on the Lambrusco or Red Zin!! Dad was also a very good cook who loved a good wine with dinner and being of European descent, allowed us kids to drink wine with our meals. I loved Liebfraumilch before I could tie my own shoes! Well, maybe not that early, but when we were in junior high, I remember having wine with our meals a lot. Okay, I guess it WAS before I could tie my own shoes!!

Another health tip...did you know that cinnamon helps lower your blood sugar? You can even buy capsules of cinnamon just for that purpose!

And one more...did you know walnuts are really good for you...they contain fatty acids that are really healthy and eaten at night before bed, they can also help you sleep better!

With all these yummy foods, I almost wish I had high cholesterol! NOT!!! I'll just eat them anyway. Now where's my favorite wine glass??

Thought for the day...

"Get over here! I'm gonna eat ya! I'm bigger than you. I'm higher on the food chain. Get in my belly!"
